Embracing Medical Fitness Programming at a Municipality-Owned Center
A Chicago suburb’s Parks and Recreation Department (“Department”) is responsible for over 60 parks, an Aquatic Center, a public ice rink, a “SportsPlex,” and the Health & Fitness Center (“Center”).
Opened in 2001 by a local Community Hospital, the 78,000 square-foot Center features an outpatient physical therapy clinic, gymnasium, strength-training and cardio fitness floor, two pools, group exercise studios and locker rooms. As a result of medical fitness programming, physician oversight, health outcomes and other measurements, the Center originally received Certified Facility recognition by the Medical Fitness Association in 2014.
The Challenge – Saving a Community Asset
In 2015 the local Community Hospital requested permission from the state Department of Public Health Certificate of Need Board to close the Center for the development of an ambulatory care center. As a result of significant pressure from the community and a vocal contingency of patients living with Multiple Sclerosis, the municipality exchanged a vacant site for the Center with the local Community Hospital.
